Summary

This paper addresses the problem of the identification of the semantic relations underlying Italian complex nominals of the type N+P+N. In particular we exploit the fact that the semantic relation, which is ambiguous in the majority of cases, is partially made explicit by the preposition. We present a theoretically grounded annotation framework which we use to annotate 1700 Italian NPN complex nominals with five different semantic relations, obtaining a kappa for the inter-annotator agreement of .695. Exploiting this data, we build a supervised model which determines the semantics of the CN automatically by using both string as well as supersense features. For obtaining supersenses, we experiment with a sequential tagger as well as with a plain lookup in MultiWordNet, and show that using information obtained from the former yields better results.
