Summary
This methodological note argues that it is not only desirable from a standardization pooint of view (in particular that of ISO) to distinguish the levels of abstract and concrete syntax in the definition of semantic annotation languages, but that this is also beneficial for a transparent design. It leads to languages whose concrete syntax is more transparent for annotators, since its representational choices closely match coneptual distinctions, and it allows simple, systematic interpretation of the annotations.
